Adam, Moses , and Christ

Romans 5:12-14; 19-21

“For as by one man’s (Adam’s) disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of One (Jesus Christ) shall many be made righteous. Moreover the LAW entered that the OFFENCE (SIN) might abound. But where SIN abounded GRACE did MUCH MORE abound: That as SIN hath reigned unto DEATH, even so might GRACE reign through

righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”

1. The Men

  • Adam (Rom. 5:14)

  • Moses (Rom. 5:14)

  • Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:15)

2. What they brought

  • Sin by Adam (Rom. 5:12) – Sin entered

  • Law by Moses (Rom. 5:20) – Sin abounded (John 1:17; Rom. 3:20; II Cor. 3:9; Rom. 4:15).

  • Grace by Jesus Christ (Rom. 3:21) – Grace did much more abound (John 1:17; Acts 13:39; Rom. 5:20-21; 3:24)

3. The Result

  • The Entrance of Sin by Adam – The Imputation of Sin (Romans 5:12,17-18)

  • The Knowledge of Sin by Moses (Rom. 3:20) – The Condemnation of Sin

  • The Forgiveness of Sin by Jesus Christ (Acts 3:38-39) – The Justification of Life (Rom. 5:18) - Acts 3:38, Col. 1:14, Eph. 1:7, Col. 2:13

4. The 3 Great Laws

The Law of Sin and Death by Adam (Rom. 8:2)

Note “the law of sin and death,” in Genesis 2:16 and 17.

“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:16 – 17).

“So he drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden, Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24).

The law of sin and death is universal. Death is spiritual, physical and the second death. (John 5:23 to 29) (Ephesians 2:1 to 6) (Romans 6:23) (Revelation 20:12 to 15). Sin and death entered by Adam. (Romans 5:12).

By Adam, sin and death passed upon all men. Sin entered by Adam. This law is a universal law. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. “There is none righteous; no, not one.” Romans 3:10. Condemnation upon all by Adam.

The Law of Commandments By Moses (Eph. 2:15, John 1:17)

  • "The law entered (by Moses) that sin might abound.” Romans 5:20.

  • “The law was added because of transgressions.” Galatians 3:19.

  • "Under the law God’s covenant people (Israel) received the spirit of bondage unto fear.Romans 8:15.

  • “The Ministration of Condemnation.” II Corinthians 3:9.

  • “The Ministration of Death.” I Corinthians 3:7.

The Law of the Spirit of life by Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:2-3)

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.”

However the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus not only frees the: believing sinner from the curse and penalty of the law of Sinai and from the law of sin and death, but it empowers and enables him, as a new creature in Christ Jesus to walk in the Spirit and fulfill the righteousness of the law (Romans 8:4).

“For sin shall not have dominion over you; for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” Romans 6:14.

“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law.” Galatians 4:4-5. “To redeem them that were under the law.”

“For He hath made Him to be sin for us who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” II Corinthians 5:21.

Ministration of the Life, Spirit, Righteousness, and Liberty (2 Cor. 3:6,8,9,17)

5. The Condemnation

  • The human race condemned in Adam (Romans 5:17 to 20).

  • The human race condemned by the law of Moses (II Corinthians 3:9).

  • The believer is now no condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1).

6. The Present Duty and Responsibility of the Believer

To POSSESS the Law of the Spirit of Life.

To Possess this law of life is to be saved, is to pass out of death into life. Then God declares the believer to be alive from the dead. (Romans 6:13 - John 11:25 and 26 - Galatians 2:20 - Colossians 2:13). This is the truth of Romans 8:2, “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

To PROFESS the Law of the Spirit of Life.

To profess this law, means to demonstrate Galatians 2:20 - II Corinthians 4:6 - by walking in the Spirit, manifesting the fruit of the Spirit and fulfilling the righteousness of the law. (Romans 8:4). When the sinner by faith appropriates the law of life, he receives the Holy Spirit.

To PROPAGATE the Law of the Spirit of Life.

To propagate this law of life is to preach this life, giving the message to others. “We preach not ourselves but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake; for God. Who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (II Corinthians 4:5 and 6). To preach the word and ministry of Reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18-21). As we thus demonstrate and propagate, let us remember I Corinthians 1:21.
